Belonging speech Essays
Belonging speech Essays Belonging speech Essay Belonging speech Essay Belonging, what Is It? I believe belonging Is when you can say that you are a part of something, when you have a group or a club or even a lifestyle that other people share. In short, I believe that a sense of belonging can be found in the things or people that have shared the same experiences, both good and bad, because we can identify ourselves in those people. Today we will be exploring this idea of belonging in two texts; one is the of poems Fillies Crooknecks and SST Patriots College, by Polish-born Australian poet, Peter Crooknecks, and the other text is the 2012 movie Wreck it Ralph, directed by Rich Moore. The poems SST Patrick College and Fillies Crooknecks both deal with the notion of self-isolation and an inability to relate to the people that surround a persona. In both poems, we can assume that the persona is Peter Crooknecks himself. In Fillies Crooknecks he talks about how he could never relate to his father and his fathers friends when they would reminisce of their lives In Poland. He feels a sense of distance between himself and his parents culture that, as he says In the poem, he Inherited unknowingly. In the poem In the folk museum, delectation from a culture Is also portrayed, but this time It Is about the personas lack of connection to the Australian culture. The persona describes the things he sees in the museum as if they are foreign and unknown to him, so much so that he has to read the names of the objects to know what they are. A reason why the poet doesnt feel he can relate may be because he doesnt share the same experiences and doesnt have the same traditions and customs that other people, both his Eastern European parents had and his Australian culture, would have shared. He cant relate, or reminisce, or appreciate either of his two cultures, because he has never known enough about them to have an emotional attachment, and It Is this lack of attachment that prevents him from feeling a sense of inclusion. The sense of exclusion from a group Is also present In the film Wreck It Ralph. Ralph, who was the bad guy In an arcade game, was constantly ostracizes from the rest of he characters in the game. He lived on a pile of bricks far away from everyone else. He, like Peter Crooknecks, was often segregated from everyone else, except in the film, the exclusion was intentional. In the same way Crooknecks couldnt help not being able to relate to his father, Ralph couldnt help but break things, and the more he broke things, the more he would be distanced from the others in the game. He would have felt helpless and isolated, and his hunger to belong with everyone else is what made him escape his game in search off medal to prove with worth. In one scene of the movie, Ralph is seen attending a Bad-Anon, a support group for the villains in the arcade games. Here he is able to communicate his Ideas and feelings to people who feel the same and go through the same things. Ralph can Identify himself In the support group because they all share the same experiences. This act of comradely Indicates that Ralph does In fact know how to connect to others, but that his problem is that there is simply no-one for him to establish that friendship with. Another meets Ralph, she expects him to exclude her as other people do, but upon learning that he too is a rejected outcast, she reaches out to him and they become friends. This is a good example of how past experiences influence where we feel we belong. Their bond strengthens as the plot progresses, and as both Ralph and Penelope grow closer and closer, their personalities grow and they develop trait that they didnt have before they had friends. Penelope gains a sense of assertiveness, and Ralph earns to respect and consider peoples feelings. The characters in both the poems and the film both show the concept of not belonging. It is a theme that appears in art and modern media constantly, and portrays the idea that our experiences, both good and bad, influence who or where we feel we belong. We all root for the ones that overcome obstacles and win battles despite having disadvantages. We all root for the underdog; because we, as an audience, identify ourselves in them; because we have all, at one point or another, felt the same.

My Struggle through High School Essay Example
My Struggle through High School Essay Example My Struggle through High School Essay My Struggle through High School Essay Essay Topic: High School Middle School Name: Course: Lecturer: Date: My Struggle through High School I have always been ambitious in everything that I do. This has enabled me to work with dedication and diligence. Other than the occasional instances of sickness, my school years in elementary and all through middle school were flawless, as I swayed with the motions of school life. However, this was to change during my final years in junior high when I began noticing changes in my health. I had noticed a small lump in my armpit, but I had not thought much about it. It was only after some several months had passed that I felt an intense pain and I decided to have it examined. By this time, I had already started high school. The first visit to the doctor did not reveal much. I had to take some medical tests and the biopsy revealed that I had cancer. I could not believe it at first, for I could not understand how I could get cancer at my age. This denial made me reluctant in starting treatment, as I sought the second and third opinion concerning the diagnosis. All the doctors at different health centers confirmed the diagnosis. I finally yielded to the pressure from my family and healthcare providers and I began the cancer treatments last year. I had to go to the hospital many times, and the treatments I received made me tired and weak. My situation was worse because of my weak immune system. I missed school for many days. The pain I felt was immeasurable and I could not compare it to anything I have ever experienced. It was during this time that I realized the value and benefits of having genuine friends. They would visit me often at home, and they would make the time to study with me during the weekends. I was determined to finish high school and graduate at the same time with them, and I put a lot of dedication in my studies at home. I did not attend classes, and I missed the opportunity of learning, as the others were learning. Although I took the time to study on my own, I knew that I could not compare this with the classroom experience. I did not have the time to go to the library or to use the learning resources that were available to the other students. All these struggles and challenges affected my experience through school. Since I began the treatments, I have noticed great improvements in my health. The first few months in my final year were tough, as I had to catch up with my classmates. My dedication finally paid off. I am in the top high school in Baltimore, and securing a good grade is a reflection of the hard work and dedication that I put because there is much competition. My experience with cancer and the struggles I faced made me realize that a person can accomplish anything if he or she determines to work with diligence and dedication. It made me resolve to work harder to fulfill my life’s dreams. This has led me to apply to this institution, because I know that it represents a beginning for me to accomplish the objectives I have set. The institution is renowned for its top quality education, and a dedicated faculty, something that I identify with and appreciate.

Give your reaction to the story, your impression of the story, how it Essay
Give your reaction to the story, your impression of the story, how it relates to your life, compare it to another story, or anything--as long as it involves an assigned story you read - Essay Example They share the same mental isolation due to their limited social relationships and fragile, chaotic environments. Bartleby and Peyton share an identical sense of mental isolation because of their limited social relationships. Melville shows that self-reliance means total social isolation. Bartleby works inside a cramped room, with only walls and papers to view on. One can only imagine the lonely life of a scrivener, whose work consists of endless copies and with no actual human relationships formed or strengthened in the process. As a result, the repetitive work must have killed Bartleby’s spirit. Soon, the loneliness deactivates his mind until all he can say is that he would rather not to. For me, the meaning of this phrase, â€Å"I would prefer not to,†is that he resists connecting with other people as the reaction to the world that no longer has meaning for him. The world rejected him; he rejects it back. Essentially, Bartleby’s humanity is reduced to nothingness. Peyton also has a limited social world. Despite coming from a rich family, it seems that â€Å"circumstanc es of an imperious nature†could refer to different social conditions that lead to him being more detached from the social world than usual (Bierce). Because of this detachment, it is easy for Peyton to give way to delusions, especially the delusion of escaping his captors. For me, it is particularly bitter to read a story of escape, and to later realize that it is only imagined by a less courageous man. The main impact of a mental isolation for Peyton is too much dreaming and too little action; hence, it leads to his demise. Melville and Peyton also show that the fragility and turmoil of their environments has a direct influence on people’s mental states. Bartleby is a scrivener for a lawyer involved in bonds and mortgages, or in short, the affairs of the wealthy. He works at Wall Street and to some extent; his life should be

Persuasive Message - Coursework Example Money should not be the only determining factor when you are faced with a tough decision about the welfare of your beloved pet. That’s why we would like to call your attention to the possibility of purchasing a pet insurance policy. Most insurance policies do not cover routine office visits or shots, but they can cover more than half of the total cost should [Fluffy] require any type of major procedure. Having a pet insurance policy means you can make decisions based on the welfare of your pet rather than the restrictions of the cost. Many clients have asked which policy Dr. Munson recommends. Although she does not have any financial interests in any pet insurance provider, there are three that stand out as having had good track records with our office: Whether you use one of these plans or another, we hope you will consider obtaining insurance for your pet. While we all hope [Fluffy] will never need extensive medical care, better decisions can be made for [his] welfare if you have prepared in advance. As always, you can call the office any time you have concerns or

Case Analysis - Greene Gardens Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Analysis - Greene Gardens - Case Study Example Answer # 2 I would firstly think about tracking the source of the infection, since the matter concerns human life it is of an intricate nature and I would want to get to the bottom of it quickly, for example I would give a lab test of the soil and manure used on my ranches to see if strains of the bacteria were present. Fresh vegetables such as spinach have frequently been said to be infected with the E. coli bacteria (World Health Organization, 2011). Therefore the probability of Greene Garden’s ranches being responsible also increases. I would next try and brainstorm with my team the measures which Greene Garden can take to reduce the threat to our vegetables, for example spraying the fields with pesticides etc and using better quality fertilizers in stead of animal manure (Mukherjeea, Spehb, & Diez-Gonzaleza, 2007). However, an important concern over here would be the cost constraints, I would most certainly want to do all I can to ensure that my vegetables are not at risk, yet I would want to be cost effective in my actions. Answer # 3 The new information further increases the possibility of Greene Garden’s spinach being implicated. I would first want to get in touch with someone who is involved in the investigation and has first hand knowledge regarding the method being used to test the samples. Furthermore, I would like to find out what the FDA thinks might be the source of the bacteria, for example water is known to be a carrier of the E. coli bacteria (Uzoigwe, O’Brien, & Brown, 2007) so may be getting the water tested would reveal the source of the pathogen. I would keep talking to the FDA officials and make my concerns evident to them so that they are aware of the fact that I am genuinely interested in finding out the cause and taking corrective action if my spinach is implicated because in such fragile situations it is important to have a good rapport with officials in strong positions. Additionally, I would make it a priority to run a public relations campaign regarding the safety precautions the consumers can take in order to keep themselves safe for example humans can get exposed to the E. coli strain through food, animal contact, and drinking water and also from one person to another (European Food Safety Authority, 2011). Therefore, till the FDA is able to come to a conclusion, warning people of all the possibilities and safety measures would do the customers well and also render Greene Garden a good name. Answer # 4 I would talk to my contact person at Tossed Fresh and try to convince them to recall the product. It might be hard because recalling so many products leads to a lot of losses yet if the long term and short term goals are weighed against each other, the benefit from recalling the product far exceeds the long term loss of reputation if the spinach from Greene Garden was actually tested positive for E. Coli. I would also try to convince Tossed Fresh on the grounds that since GRT Salads along with two other companies had recalled products it would now reflect badly on Tossed Fresh if it did not recall its products. It is understandable that the products have a small shelf life and that losses would be incurred, however,

A.Plan of Investigation This study will seek to answer the question â€Å"How did the Treaty of Versailles during WW1 contribute to further conflict in the middle east?†I chose this topic because since my dad is in the air force he deals with the Middle East on multiple occasions. I thought it would be interesting to study this to see what could have been the cause of the crisis we see today. We could learn ways to handle the Middle East better by basing plans off what we know from WW1. In order to answer this question I have used the following methods of researching in peace settlement books and novels that talk specifically about the treaty of Versailles effect during WW1. I also did some research on some online articles. In order to study this topic I used the following sources; A Piece to End All Piece written by David Fromkin, and Kingmakers, The invention of the Modern Middle East written by Karl E. Meyer and Shareen Blair Brysac. B. Summary of Evidence The treaty of Versailles was singed on June 28, 1919 . The main terms of this treaty were, Germany had to accept the Blame for starting the war, Germany had to pay  £6,600 million for the damage done during the war called reparations, Germany was forbidden to have submarines or an air force, her navy could only have six battle ships and an Army of just 100,000 men, and Germany was not allowed to place any troops in the Rhineland . Britain and France acquired Germany’s colonies. The conflicts in the Middle East started around the year 1914, the same year as World War 1 . World War 1 was always referred too as "the war to end all wars." The Treaty of Versailles decreased all power in the Middle East because the defeat of the Central Powers including Turkey which w... ... do not have much control over themselves anymore. The property loss and the displacement of their people was such a significant number that the mixing of people, and lack of populations created conflicts between the Middle Eastern countries . Tribes that were made in these territories started to fight over power and ruling of the land, and other conflicts arose from those. Such conflicts are still seen today relating to ideas like these. When the Treaty of Versailles was made, its points were not directed for the Middle East, but were for Germany . The idea that it would have such an effect on the Middle East, and would cause such conflict was not foreseen since it is considered to be such a small and a non-powerful area. But nevertheless, the Treaty of Versailles has played a large impact in the conflicts of the Middle East after World war One.

Hospitality Industry Essay
Hospitality Industry is now-a-days, one of the major industries in many countries of the world. This comprises operation of hotels, motels, resorts, guesthouses, rest houses, picnic and recreation spots etc. while industrialists, businessmen, professionals, working people and of course tourists are the principal customers. In fact in many countries, hospitality industry is the principal source of foreign exchange earning. Tourism indicates touring activities by local inhabitants and foreign visitors throughout the country. In order to develop tourism many preconditions have to be fulfilled, such as proper infrastructure, abundant, cheap and secured commuter facilities road, rail, water and air abundant, cheap and secured staying places viz. hotels, motels, resorts etc. furnished with recreational and entertainment facilities; abundant and secured tourist spots viz. historical places, beaches, parks, waterfalls, lakes, rivers, hills and hill tracts etc. and lastly a peaceful political and administrative atmosphere in the country. Hospitality industry and tourism are closely related, one cannot thrive without the development of the other. Hospitality industry cannot march forward without the foreign visitors and tourists, the local inhabitants form only a portion of the customers. Foreign exchange cannot be earned without influx of tourists and visitors from abroad. On the other hand tourism cannot thrive without first constructing the hotels, motels, resorts, guesthouses etc. So the two sectors are very closely interdependent. National infrastructure and facilities: No country can develop without necessary infrastructure viz roads, highways and bridges; sea ports and airports; rivers and coastal waters worth navigation; airways and rail roads etc. These infrastructures are essential and should adequately connect the trade-centres as well as all important spots and resorts worth visitation by tourists and the local people.

Genetic Engineering Essay
By using the techniques of genetic engineering scientists are able to modify genetic materials so that a particular gene of interest from one cell can be incorporated into a different cell. It is necessary to obtain a gene to modify genetic material. First a scientist isolates plasmid DNA from bacteria and DNA carrying a gene of interest from cells of another organism, such as an animal. A piece of DNA containing the gene is inserted into a plasmid, producing recombinant DNA, and the recombinant plasmid is returned to a bacterial cell. This cell is then grown in culture forming a clone of cells. The foreign DNA spliced into the plasmid is replicated with the rest of the plasmid as the host cell multiplies. In this way, the gene of interest is cloned. A critical step in gene cloning is the identification of the bacterial clone carrying the gene of interest. Gene cloning and genetics engineering were made possible by the discovery of restriction enzymes. These enzymes protect the bacteria against intruding DNA from other organisms, such as phages or other bacteria cells. They work by cutting up the foreign DNA, a process called restriction. Most restriction enzymes are very specific, recognizing short nucleotide sequences in DNA molecules and cutting at specific points within these sequences. The bacterial cell protects its own DNA from restriction by adding methyl groups(CH3)to adenines or cytosines within the sequence recognized by the restriction enzyme. The restriction fragments are double-stranded DNA fragments with at least one single-stranded end, called a sticky end. These short extensions will form hydrogen-bonded base pairs with complementary single-stranded stretches on other DNA molecules cut with the same enzymes. The unions formed in this way are only temporary, because only a few hydrogen bonds hold the fragments together. The DNA functions can be made permanent , however, by the enzyme DNA ligase, which seals the Strands by catalyzing the formation of phosphodiesterbonds. We now have recombinant DNA, that has been spliced together from two different sources. There are five basic steps included in modifying genetic material so that a particular gene of interest from one cell can be incorporated into a different cell . Step 1: Isolation of vector and gene-sources DNA. Step 2:Isolation of vector and gene-source DNA. Step 3: introduction of the cloning vector into cells. Step 4: Cloning of cells and also foreign genes. Step 5 : Identification of cell clones carrying the gene of interest. To determine whether the gene was successfully incorporated we can synthesize a probe complementary to it. We trace the probe, which will hydrogen-bond specifically to complementary single strands of the desired gene ,by labeling it with a radioactive isotope or a fluorescent tag. An example of how gene transfer and incorporation have been used in biomedical or commercial application is gene therapy of insulin. One of the first practical applications of gene splicing was the production of mammalian hormones and other mammalian regulatory proteins in bacteria. Human insulin and human growth hormone (HGH) were among the earliest examples. This insulin produced in this way has greatly benefited the 2 million diabetics in the United states who depend on insulin treatment to control their disease.

Online Courses Are Considered for High School in fairfax County Essay
Online Courses Are Considered for High School in fairfax County - Essay Example Of course, the radical and very new concept of an online high school is something which has divided opinion regarding the viability, merits, advantages and disadvantages of the possibility of offering this as an option for high school students. While some educational professionals and parents alike see fantastic potential and convenience in this, many are also concerned that the disadvantages may outweigh the benefits and that traditional high school educational methods and approaches should be enforced without offering alternatives. However, though there are inevitably going to be certain problems with any type of innovative and radical change to educational institutions, the advantages of creating a virtual high school are extremely substantial, both for the students and parents involved and the educational institutions which provide them. Due to this, an online high school course should be offered as an alternative to traditional systems by using other successful courses as models , as this will benefit both students and educational institutions alike. The concept of online education has garnered much research which shows it to be a very effective form of pedagogy, and so the quality of education that students would receive in an online learning environment would not be reduced, but enhanced. While higher education programmes have traditionally been governed by the conventional components of ‘teaching’, recent decades have brought about a re-evaluation of the fundamental premise and function of education. This has led to a significant shift in focus towards a learner-centred approach where autonomy and the facilitation of independent and lifelong learning has become a primary goal (Somekh 20).
